The Pirates of Penzance (2018)

The Pirates of Penzance at the Theater at Monmouth.

This one requires a little explanation. It is, in fact, Gilbert and Sullivan’s musical play, but the director’s concept required that it be uprooted from 1880’s Penzance and moved, instead, to 1920’s Coney Island, where it shall be played five times a day by a fairly motley troupe. For this design I pulled elements of the historical Coney Island parks and arranged them around a semi-makeshift, rennfaire-esque mini-stage that projected at an angle out of the real proscenium. I found and made posters like the ones of the day, and gave it all a 1920’s deco aesthetic of the amusement park variety.
